WebSphere Service Oriented Architecture: “Consumer Direct”

Configurable, virtualised IT support for the insurance industry

Client: One of the largest managed service providers in the UK.
Background: Making sure that virtualised technology resources are aligned to the needs of service providers through a true build to run approach, based on a Capgemini data center.
Task: Using IBM technology, including WebSphere, DB2, MQ series and pSeries, Capgemini has developed a powerful virtual back office service, available to existing and new insurance distributors. The approach has already been well-proven in service, delivering low cost start up, scalable environment and consistent service levels. This solution is a prime example of an WebSphere based, Service Oriented Architecture and has been described by IBM Software as “an industry leader”, “the best WebSphere-based e-Run implementation we have seen in the UK” and “a text-book e-Business architecture that IBM is proud to be associated with”.

WebSphere Business Integration

Capgemini has a WebSphere MQ Centre of Competence based out of Swansea. We have numerous references including the following:

Client: A large industrial enterprise
Background: To implement multiple MQSI hubs across our client’s European businesses
Task:  MQSeries was first implemented within by Capgemini in 1998, initially on OS390 and Windows NT platforms, later on AIX. Since then, multiple MQSI systems have been implemented, including messaging systems between the UK and Netherlands. Capgemini are the client’s Centre of Excellence for MQ/MQSI and enable their information inventory to be documented and information flows to be re-used within an Integration Framework. The project has used: IBM MQSeries, MQSI,

Siebel and DB2 on zOS

Client: UK Building Society
Background: Capgemini teamed with IBM and Siebel to deliver the program for 12,000 employees
Task: The solution offers a single, consistent and real-time view of customer data, previously spread across multiple systems, to 12,000 users at over a thousand sites. Incorporating IBM zSeries and pSeries, IBM DB2 and Siebel eFinance, the new solution has delivered improved productivity and efficiency, higher quality customer service, greater customer retention, and provided marketing analytics for increased sales.

Capgemini were awarded the 2004 IBM Global Consultants & Integrators Beacon Award for showing partnering capabilities and mastery of technology on this program.

Oracle “Capacity Upgrade on Demand” on pSeries

Client: One of the largest and best-known financial services companies in the UK.
Background: a long-standing managed services client of Capgemini, our client was looking for a major reduction in total cost of ownership while simultaneously improving service quality.
Task: Migrate legacy mainframes to a single z900 running an Oracle database, and consolidate existing Oracle databases on mid-range servers to duplicated pairs of IBM p690 and p670 platforms, ensuring scalable service and variable costing based on capacity utilised. Joint working by Capgemini and IBM at the very earliest stages formed the basis for development of a flexible financial model, which has proved fundamental to delivering the right levels of performance required to match the business needs going forward. The excellent proven working relationship between both alliance partners was also a key factor in building client confidence.

Rational Unified Process

Client: Capgemini
Background: Our Accelerated Delivery Centres have a development environment based on Rational development tools and the Rational Unified Process (RUP).
Task: Through our 27 Accelerated Delivery Centres worldwide, Capgemini offers clients a unique environment featuring creativity, speed, knowledge reuse, leading technologies and robust infrastructure. Capgemini’s RUP Academy has provided a learning centre and training environment for nearly 5,000 Capgemini consultants, providing the foundation for rapid development of advanced solutions, such as the Capgemini ePortal Solution. Built for a leading global bearings and seals manufacturer, Capgemini improved development productivity by 30% on the ePortal Solution. The manufacturer uses the portal to improve service to distributors and make real-time changes to Web content as needed.

In 2004 Capgemini were awarded “Most Valuable Rational Partner” as the IBM Business Partner who best improves their customers’ software development capabilities using the Rational platform. Judges chose Capgemini as the winner for its success in leveraging and customising RUP to deliver solutions across a very large global customer base, with quantifiable productivity gains.

Rational Unified Process in a complex WebSphere environment

Client: UK Rail Organisation
Background: Our client wanted a new system to enable passengers to make, cancel or alter rail reservations much closer to the time of travel and to allow customers the ability to specify their precise requirements for a journey in greater detail.
Task: Capgemini successfully implemented and benchmarked a high throughput service with 180 transactions per second (ultimately 4720 trans/sec). The solution was a complex integrated service using J2EE, WebSphere and Struts framework on pSeries and xSeries. Delivery followed the full RUP lifecycle with Workshop driven analysis (80+ workshops completed in 4 month period, 132 use cases).

Versata, WebSphere and Java Development in a complex legacy environment

Client: UK Utilities Organisation
Background: Our client’s reporting systems were unable to support future growth in demand and were at risk of total failure. Capgemini successfully built and now run a new system to support Mining Reports, for now and well into the future.
Task: We built a complex J2EE deployment in a legacy environment with sophisticated component integration.
This is showpiece Versata and WebSphere reference, demonstrating the power of model driven design with proven ability to accommodate change.

The results include far better public service at lower cost from the client and professionally delivered outsourcing services.
