A good policy is important but it is only the first step towards good security. Organisations also need to be confident that all their staff are aware of security issues and are prepared to take personal responsibility for them.

It’s no good if people think that security is a remote issue that is handled by a specialist department – they need to realise that it is part of their job. For example, call-centre staff need to be aware that they are at the front line when it comes to preventing people getting unauthorised access to information over the phone.

Alongside this, organisations should try to create a corporate culture that rewards people for highlighting any potential security breaches that they come across during their working day. If employees think that they will be punished for drawing attention to potential security weaknesses they will not do it, but if they get a pat on the back they will.
